Evanston Officials Respond to Hazmat Situation After Distressed Woman Found
UPDATE: Authorities in Evanston have launched a hazardous materials response after a woman was found in distress at an intermediate care facility for the mentally ill. The incident unfolded at approximately 10 a.m. on Friday at Greenwood Care, located at 1406 Chicago Ave.
Emergency services were quickly dispatched after a resident exhibited concerning symptoms. First responders reported the woman was “conscious but with altered mental status” when they arrived. She was promptly transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
At 10:12 a.m., the situation escalated as first responders discovered a suspicious substance in the woman’s room and a fanny pack. In response, they requested a hazardous materials team to assess the situation. Fire Department personnel isolated the substance and confirmed it did not pose a threat to the public, allowing for the area to be secured while investigations continued.
According to Jessie Mayo, a spokesperson for the City of Evanston, the nature of the hazardous material has yet to be determined. “Authorities have sent off the substance for testing at the Illinois State Police Crime Lab,” Mayo stated, emphasizing that the event is isolated and all protocols were followed.
The Evanston Police Department led the response, with support from the Fire Department and regional hazardous materials teams. As part of the precautionary measures, Chicago Avenue was temporarily closed between Dempster Street and Lake Street.
This incident underscores the importance of rapid response to potential health threats, especially in vulnerable populations. Greenwood Care is noted for its 145-bed capacity for individuals with chronic mental health issues, highlighting the critical need for safety and security in such environments.
As of now, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and await further analysis of the collected substance. Residents are urged to stay informed as updates develop.
