Fort Payne Boy Triumphs in Alabama Painting Competition
An 11-year-old student from Fort Payne, Alabama, has captured the spotlight by winning the state championship in the Elementary Beta Club’s on-site painting competition. Derek Flora achieved this remarkable feat at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex, emerging victorious among numerous participants from across the state.
Derek’s artistic journey began at home, where he nurtured his creativity at the kitchen counter rather than in a formal studio. “I started drawing a lot when I was four, and I started painting in 2023,” Derek stated. His love for painting stems from the joy it brings him.
The competition challenged students to create an original piece within an hour, inspired by the prompt “Wired Up,” which was revealed only at the start of the event. Derek’s painting depicted a robot in a library, reflecting his imaginative approach. To prepare, he practiced under similar conditions, simulating the competition environment by setting a timer and responding to surprise prompts from his mother, such as animals or vehicles.
Despite initial nerves, Derek maintained his focus during the timed event. He drew inspiration from renowned artist Bob Ross, thinking about his techniques to enhance his painting. “Yes, I was nervous. I just kept painting,” he shared, emphasizing his determination to create a compelling piece.
Derek’s journey has not been without challenges. Diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at two weeks old and liver disease at age two, he has faced significant health hurdles. His sister, Madelyn, also contends with cystic fibrosis and diabetes, prompting their family to adopt a homeschooling approach to accommodate their medical needs. This lifestyle allows for necessary treatments and appointments while minimizing exposure to illnesses, particularly during the winter months.
Art has become a vital outlet for Derek, who prefers to paint when he feels happy. “I don’t usually paint when I’m feeling down,” he explained, highlighting the therapeutic role creativity plays in his life. His mother, Holly Jo Flora, noted early signs of his talent, recalling how he would replicate logos with impressive accuracy at a young age. She believes art has fostered his confidence and resilience.
The moment Derek was announced as the state champion was both exhilarating and overwhelming. “I felt really good,” he said, recalling the anxiety of standing on stage before a large audience. His mother described the experience as emotional, especially considering Derek’s shy nature. “We were so proud of him – not just for winning but for competing and doing his best,” she remarked.
Madelyn expressed joy and excitement for her brother’s achievement, celebrating the moment with enthusiasm: “I think it’s awesome, and I’m really excited for him! I screamed my guts out when he won first place!” The siblings share a strong bond, supporting each other through their respective health challenges and achievements.
Derek’s victory at the state level allows him to advance to the National Beta Convention in June 2024. He is eager for the opportunity to compete again, stating, “I go to the National Beta Convention to paint again in June.” He hopes that his story encourages other children to pursue their passions. “I’d tell them to go for it!” he advised.
As he continues to build on his recent success, Derek Flora remains dedicated to his craft, painting with passion and creativity from his home in Fort Payne.
