Four Arrested, Including Mastermind, After Deadly Pakistan Mosque Bombing
BREAKING: Four suspects have been arrested in connection with the devastating mosque bombing in Islamabad, Pakistan, that claimed the lives of 31 people and injured 169 others during Friday prayers. Among those arrested is an Afghan national believed to be the mastermind behind the attack, according to Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.
The bomb exploded at a Shiite mosque in the Tarlai area on February 7, during a time when the mosque was filled with worshipers. The Islamic State has since claimed responsibility for this horrific act. Minister Naqvi reported that the suspects killed a counterterrorism officer and injured three others during the police raids conducted at their locations.
This incident marks the deadliest attack in Pakistan’s capital in over a decade, leading to widespread mourning as large crowds gathered in Islamabad for funerals over the weekend. As emotions ran high, authorities confirmed that the suicide bomber had not originated from Afghanistan but had entered the country multiple times prior to the attack.
In a controversial statement, Naqvi suggested that the attackers were funded by India, a claim that was swiftly dismissed as “baseless” by India’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which condemned the bombing. Meanwhile, Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif hinted at potential involvement from the Afghan government, a claim Afghan officials rejected, calling it “regrettable” and lacking credible evidence.
This latest attack comes on the heels of escalating violence in the region, including a November bombing in Islamabad that killed 12 people and injured 27. The recent uptick in violence coincides with a series of deadly assaults in Balochistan, which claimed 58 lives over several days. The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) has taken responsibility for those attacks, and in response, Pakistani forces have reportedly killed around 200 BLA militants in retaliatory operations.
As investigations continue, authorities are on high alert, and the nation is grappling with the aftermath of this shocking tragedy. The situation remains fluid, and further updates are expected as officials work to uncover the full extent of the network behind this deadly bombing. Stay tuned for real-time developments on this urgent story.
