Fredericktown Ends 17-Game Streak Against South Iron in Thrilling Win
BREAKING: The Fredericktown boys basketball team has just snapped a staggering 17-game losing streak against South Iron, clinching an exhilarating 55-53 victory on Thursday night. This marks their first win over South Iron since 2013, a momentous achievement for the Blackcats.
With just 19 seconds left on the clock, guard David Slinkard hit his sixth 3-pointer of the game, solidifying Fredericktown’s lead and delivering a thrilling finish that had fans on the edge of their seats. Slinkard finished the game with 25 points, shooting an impressive 6-of-12 from beyond the arc.
The Blackcats, now sporting a record of 13-11, demonstrated grit and determination by forcing three key turnovers in the final minutes of the game. Despite South Iron’s strong performance, including a game-high 26 points from Carter St. Gemme, Fredericktown maintained their composure under pressure.
South Iron, with a record of 20-5, battled back from an 18-7 deficit, closing the gap to 32-26 by halftime. The Panthers were poised to reclaim the lead when St. Gemme sank a 21-footer late in the game, but Fredericktown’s defense proved too strong in the clutch.
With less than 2 minutes to go, South Iron held a narrow 53-50 lead. However, Slinkard capitalized on a critical steal by teammate Blake Terry-Breakfield, scoring a quick layup to bring Fredericktown back into contention. In a dramatic turn, Slinkard’s decisive shot from the left wing sealed the win.
As the clock wound down, South Iron attempted a last-second offensive play, but a critical bobble resulted in a game-clinching steal for Tucker Reutzel, who contributed 12 points, 7 assists, and 7 rebounds to Fredericktown’s victory.
This game serves as a reminder of the intensity and unpredictability of high school basketball. Fredericktown’s victory not only ends a long-standing rivalry but also provides a powerful boost of confidence as they head into the postseason.
