Fresno Police Launch Major Drunk Driving Crackdown This Weekend
UPDATE: Fresno Police are launching an urgent crackdown on drunk driving this weekend, with heightened enforcement beginning at 6 P.M. on Saturday and running until 4 A.M. on Sunday. The operation, which aims to curb dangerous driving habits during holiday celebrations, will deploy an additional 11 officers specifically tasked with identifying intoxicated drivers.
“The biggest thing is, don’t risk it,” said Sgt. Todd Turney of the Fresno Police Department. Officers will be on the lookout for common traffic violations associated with impaired driving, including weaving and speeding.
The timing of this operation comes in the wake of a tragic incident earlier this week, where drunk driving claimed the lives of Carlos and Maria Pimentel in Coalinga. Authorities report that Shawn Borecha, the suspected DUI driver, attempted to overtake two vehicles while intoxicated, resulting in a head-on collision that killed the couple. Borecha now faces two counts of murder.
Statistics from the California Highway Patrol reveal a troubling trend: over 5,500 DUI cases were prosecuted in 2025, with 423 categorized as felonies due to serious injuries—eight of which were charged as murder. These preventable crashes have resulted in 15 fatalities, emphasizing the severe consequences of impaired driving.
Sgt. Turney stressed the community impact of drunk driving, stating, “When you impair your ability to operate the vehicle, bad things happen, such as a collision. You can affect people and members of the community, as well as yourself.”
The financial repercussions of a DUI are steep, averaging over $13,000 in fines and penalties for first-time offenders, along with the potential for a suspended license. To mitigate risks, Sgt. Turney advises planning ahead for safe transportation options: “Whether it’s a ride share service, a family member, or a friend, plan ahead to get to your location and back home safely.”
As this crackdown unfolds, residents are urged to remain vigilant and make responsible choices to prevent further tragedies. Share this urgent news and help spread awareness about the dangers of drunk driving this holiday weekend. For live updates, follow local news channels and stay informed.
