BREAKING NEWS: Chaitanya Gopi and Sunny Zhang have emerged as Cass County’s top spellers, securing their spots in the highly anticipated State Spelling Bee next month in Bismarck. This exciting announcement follows the annual Cass County Spelling Bee held on February 23, 2024, where Gopi, a sixth grader from Dakota Montessori School, clinched first place.

Zhang, a seventh grader at Ben Franklin Middle School, finished just behind Gopi in second place. Both students are set to showcase their extraordinary spelling abilities at the Bismarck Event Center on March 23, 2024. The stakes are high, as the winner will represent North Dakota at the prestigious 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee in May.

The Cass County competition attracted 38 students from nine local schools, highlighting the region’s dedication to academic excellence. The event commenced with a challenging written round, where only the top 12 scorers advanced to the final spell-off, ultimately determining the two state qualifiers.

Emberly Wobbema, an eighth grader from Capstone Classical Academy, earned a commendable third place, demonstrating the impressive talent present at the county bee.

As the excitement builds for the upcoming state competition, Gopi and Zhang prepare to face off against the best spellers in North Dakota. Their journey not only showcases their remarkable skills but also inspires fellow students and the community to strive for academic achievement.

Stay tuned for more updates as Gopi and Zhang gear up for the State Spelling Bee, where they will compete for the chance to represent North Dakota on a national stage!
