URGENT UPDATE: A Hinesburg firefighter was struck by a vehicle on Thursday while responding to an emergency on Route 116. Fortunately, the firefighter sustained only minor injuries in this alarming incident, which could have had far more serious consequences.

Authorities confirmed that firefighters were dispatched to a report of a vehicle crashing into a guardrail near Hollow Road. Initially, the situation involved an unresponsive driver, but as crews arrived, they discovered the vehicle had begun to move again. The driver, a female, was subsequently stopped along Route 116 after firefighters assessed her condition.

While a firefighter was placing a chock under the tire to prevent the vehicle from rolling, the driver unexpectedly accelerated, striking the firefighter before the chocks could take effect. Hinesburg Fire Chief Prescott Nadeau expressed his shock at the incident, stating, “It was probably one of the scarier things as a fire chief, because you’re watching as your members, helplessly watching, as a many-thousand-pound vehicle accelerates forward. Had things been, you know, moments different, the outcome could have been far worse.”

The driver was transported to the hospital, but details regarding her identity and any potential charges remain unclear as authorities continue their investigation. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers first responders face while on duty, especially in emergency situations.

Officials urge the public to remain vigilant and cautious around emergency scenes to ensure the safety of both responders and bystanders. As developments unfold, further updates will be provided on the status of the firefighter and the driver involved.
