URGENT UPDATE: New fundraising numbers reveal that Governor Kathy Hochul has amassed over $30 million for her reelection campaign, placing her significantly ahead of both primary and Republican challengers. As of January 2023, Hochul’s war chest exceeds $20 million, an astonishing 16 times more than her closest rivals.

The latest figures, filed for the six-month period ending in January, underscore Hochul’s commanding position as campaign season heats up. Despite new campaign finance regulations aimed at reducing the influence of big money in politics, Hochul’s fundraising prowess remains unshaken.

While the regulations have introduced public financing for campaigns and lowered maximum contribution limits, they haven’t deterred major contributions from influential figures in accounting and real estate. “The governor is in this interesting situation where anything from the left has been bolstered by the public financing system,” said Blair Horner of the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG). “The lower contribution limits make it harder for her to raise money against wealthy donors that may be coming at her from the Republican side.”

Despite these challenges, Hochul continues to attract donations from those with business interests before the state. A review by NY1 indicates that numerous contributors are seeking state business or action. Notably, a real estate developer who donated the maximum amount to Hochul’s campaign was later featured alongside her at the announcement of a new, state-backed affordable housing project in Yonkers.

“This is all about business interests trying to influence state policy to their advantage, and it’s all legal,” remarked John Kaehny of Reinvent Albany. Hochul’s spokesperson insisted, “The Governor approaches every decision through the lens of what is best for New Yorkers. Campaign contributions have no influence on government decisions.”

As the campaign intensifies, key questions arise about the influence of significant donors and the implications for state policy. With the election approaching, all eyes will be on how Hochul navigates this landscape and whether her substantial fundraising advantage translates into electoral success.

Developments are ongoing, and the political landscape in New York is shifting rapidly. Stay tuned for more updates as Hochul’s campaign unfolds and reactions from her opponents emerge.
