Homeowner Shoots Intruder in Somerset Township Break-In Attempt
UPDATE: A homeowner shot and killed an alleged intruder early this morning in Somerset Township, Pennsylvania, during a break-in attempt. The incident unfolded around 2 a.m. on Locust Street, where state police were called to respond to reports of an attempted burglary.
According to County District Attorney Tom Leiden, the homeowner was awakened by loud banging on his kitchen window. Upon investigation, he discovered a male intruder attempting to break in. The intruder had reportedly shattered a window and was warned by the homeowner that he was armed. In a split-second decision, the homeowner shot the intruder in the head, leading to his death on the scene.
Police arrived shortly after and found the intruder’s body near the back door. The homeowner was briefly detained for questioning, but preliminary investigations suggest he acted in self-defense. No charges have been filed at this time, and authorities have confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the community.
Leiden reassured residents, stating, “There is no danger to the public.” The identity of the deceased intruder has yet to be released pending notification of next-of-kin. Several individuals have been interviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.
Local resident JD Ross expressed concern over the incident, stating, “Scary, that’s my reaction. I’ve lived here off and on since I was five years old. This is a nice neighborhood.” The community is grappling with the emotional aftermath of the shooting, reflecting on its impact in an area typically considered safe.
As the investigation continues, officials urge anyone with additional information to come forward. The Pennsylvania State Police are leading the inquiry and will provide updates as more details emerge. Stay tuned for further developments on this breaking story.
