Iowa State Blood Drive Aims for 1,000 Donors in Urgent Call to Action

UPDATE: Iowa State University (ISU) students are launching an urgent initiative to boost blood donations, kicking off the nation’s largest student-run blood drive from March 6 to March 8. The drive will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Memorial Union’s Great Hall, and officials are calling on the campus community to step up and save lives.

Organized entirely by students, the ISU Blood Drive has a history of making a profound impact on local and national blood supplies. In the past, the drive has collected anywhere from 800 to 1,200 donations each semester, but this spring, organizers are aiming even higher—targeting between 950 and 1,000 donors.

Thomas Roth, a senior in mechanical engineering and co-director of the blood drive, expressed the urgency of increasing participation this semester. “We had about 640 donors last spring, but we’re determined to reach at least 800 this time,” Roth said. “Every donation truly counts and can change lives.”

The emotional appeal of blood donation is evident. Each donation can save up to three lives, and Roth emphasized that the impact is felt beyond campus. “My blood has gone to hospitals in Des Moines and Chicago, which shows the reach of our contributions,” he added.

Hannah Brown, a senior in psychology and member of the blood drive’s outreach committee, echoed Roth’s sentiments. “We believe we can hit 950 to 1,000 donors this semester,” she said. “It may sound ambitious, but we’re hopeful!”

Brown highlighted the significance of each donation, noting, “With one person donating blood, you can save three lives. It can be transported to hospitals nearby or even across the country.”
