Israel Reopens Gaza’s Rafah Crossing for Limited Exodus
BREAKING: Israel has just authorized the partial reopening of the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt after nearly two years of closure. This crucial development, confirmed by an Israeli security official, allows a limited number of Palestinians to leave the war-torn enclave and an even smaller number to return.
This reopening comes as part of the first phase of a U.S.-brokered ceasefire agreement that took effect in mid-October 2023. The European Union is overseeing operations at the crossing, which has remained largely shut since Israel’s control began in May 2024. Preparations for this critical moment were carried out on Sunday by the EU, Egypt, and other involved parties.
Initially, only 50 people per day will be allowed to cross in either direction, according to Egypt’s state-affiliated AlQahera News. In total, reports indicate that 150 Palestinians will be permitted to exit Gaza daily, while just 50 will be allowed to re-enter. However, the financial burden of crossing, alongside complex security and bureaucratic hurdles, means that the reality of leaving remains daunting for many.
Historically, some Palestinians have reported spending thousands of dollars to use the crossing when it was open, a steep price few can afford in the current economic climate. This situation highlights the ongoing humanitarian crisis within Gaza.
As this story is still developing, it underscores the urgent need for updates regarding crossing conditions and the impact on the lives of those seeking to escape the dire circumstances in Gaza.
Stay tuned for further information as this situation evolves.
