Italy Withdraws Troops from Erbil Base Following Missile Strike
UPDATE: Italy is pulling its remaining troops from the military base in Erbil, northern Iraq, following a missile strike that struck the facility earlier today. Defence Minister Guido Crosetto confirmed the drawdown, emphasizing that the withdrawal had been planned in advance of the attack, which has not resulted in any casualties among Italian personnel.
According to Crosetto, all Italian troops are currently safe after relocating to secure areas as part of pre-arranged security protocols. He stated that 102 personnel have already returned to Italy, while approximately 40 others have been moved to Jordan.
The operation to bring home the remaining contingent is in progress, but Crosetto described the logistics as complex. Troops cannot be evacuated directly by air and are expected to depart overland, likely via Türkiye.
When asked whether the missile strike was intentional, Crosetto remarked that it was indeed targeted, noting the base’s significance as a NATO facility that also houses U.S. infrastructure. He highlighted that the threat of such an attack had been anticipated, prompting the activation of heightened security measures ahead of time.
This urgent situation unfolds amidst a backdrop of escalating conflicts involving Iran, which began after U.S. and Israeli strikes on February 28. The ongoing Iranian retaliation, including drone and missile attacks across the region, raises serious concerns for coalition forces in Iraq, particularly for the Hungarian troops also stationed at the Erbil base.
Given the strategic importance of the Erbil base, any sustained escalation poses significant risks for allied contingents. As the situation develops, further updates will be crucial for ensuring the safety of all personnel involved in these international efforts.
