Joseph Omundson, Beloved Community Member, Passes Away at 86
BREAKING: Joseph ‘Joe’ Omundson, a cherished figure in the Duluth community, has passed away on February 18, 2026, at the age of 86. He died at the Interfaith Care Center in Carlton, leaving behind a legacy of service, dedication, and family love.
Born on August 8, 1939, in Minneapolis, Joe moved to Duluth at the age of 8 and quickly became an integral part of the community. He graduated from Denfeld High School in 1957 and served in the Army National Guard from 1962 to 1968, showcasing his commitment to both his country and community.
Joe had a successful career as a sales representative at Georgia Pacific (Superwood), retiring in 1997 after an impressive 37 years. His professional achievements were matched by his community involvement, including membership in the Masons, Enclid Lodge, and the Shrine. He actively supported local sports, serving as a hockey referee and fast-pitch softball umpire.
In 1976, Joe married his beloved wife, Barb Hutchinson, at 1st Covenant Church. Together, they nurtured a family that includes their daughter Jody (Mike) Rademaker, son Joel (Rebecca) Omundson, and five grandchildren, along with two twin granddaughters, Veronica Rademaker and Julia (Jon) Strong.
Joe was not only a family man but also a passionate athlete. He participated in numerous races, ranging from 5-mile events to marathons, and enjoyed downhill and cross-country skiing. His adventurous spirit led him on motorcycle trips to Sturgis, South Dakota, and vacations to Mexico.
A visitation for Joe will take place at the Cremation Society, located at 4100 Grand Ave. in Duluth, MN, on Wednesday, March 18, from 2-4 PM. The service will include a Masons’ tribute at 4 PM, followed by honors from the Duluth Honor Guard. He will be laid to rest at Oneota Cemetery.
Joe’s family expresses heartfelt gratitude to all friends and family for their unwavering support and extends a special thanks to the dedicated staff at Interfaith Care Center and St. Croix Hospice for their exceptional care during his final days.
This news profoundly impacts the Duluth community, as Joe’s contributions and spirit will be deeply missed. His legacy of kindness and dedication will continue to inspire those who knew him.
