Lonza Expands Bioconjugate Synthesis Tech Amid ADC Demand Surge
UPDATE: Lonza has just announced a significant boost to its advanced synthesis capabilities, enhancing support for the urgent development of antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) and other bioconjugates. This initiative aims to meet the growing demand for innovative cancer therapies, particularly relevant in today’s fast-evolving biopharmaceutical landscape.
The latest enhancements include the full integration of Lonza’s proprietary ADC technology platform, which now features the groundbreaking GlycoConnect® antibody conjugation technology and HydraSpace® polar spacer technology. These advancements, acquired through Lonza’s acquisition of Synaffix in 2023, are designed to improve the efficacy and tolerability of ADCs, which are crucial in treating complex tumors.
In a bold move, Lonza has also introduced dual‐payload ADC technology. This innovative approach enables the attachment of two complementary cytotoxic agents to a single antibody, allowing for customizable payload ratios. This flexibility is pivotal in addressing challenges such as tumor heterogeneity and drug-induced resistance, which are significant barriers in cancer treatment.
Located in Oss, Netherlands, Lonza’s expanded site has ramped up its laboratory infrastructure, enhancing research and development capabilities for both ADCs and emerging bioconjugate modalities. The site now offers small‐scale bioconjugate prototyping as a service, along with newly established scale-up capabilities to produce pilot toxicology material. This comprehensive service model provides clients with end-to-end support, from discovery through clinical supply, leveraging Lonza’s extensive development and manufacturing expertise.
According to Jan Vertommen, Vice President of Commercial Development at Advanced Synthesis, “Our recent advancements strengthen the support we provide to drug developers active in the field of ADCs and other bioconjugates.” He emphasized that the expansion of the Oss site reinforces Lonza’s commitment to enhancing its global bioconjugate development and manufacturing network.
This development is critical as the biopharmaceutical industry faces increased pressure to deliver effective treatments rapidly. By expanding its capabilities, Lonza is positioned to play a vital role in the ongoing fight against cancer, making innovative ADC design more accessible to drug developers globally.
As the demand for ADCs continues to surge, stakeholders will be closely monitoring Lonza’s progress and the impact of these new technologies on drug development timelines and patient outcomes. Keep an eye on this evolving story as Lonza sets the stage for the future of bioconjugate therapies.
Expect more updates as these advancements unfold and reshape the landscape of cancer treatment options.
