Marin Catholic Falls to King’s Academy in NorCal Playoffs, 85-73

BREAKING: Marin Catholic’s dream season came to a stunning end on Tuesday night as the No. 8 Wildcats fell to No. 9 King’s Academy (Sunnyvale) in the opening round of the NorCal Division-I boys basketball championships. The final score was 85-73, marking a bitter conclusion to a remarkable journey for the Wildcats.

The game, held in Kentfield, CA, showcased the resilience of Marin Catholic, which finished the season with an impressive 24-5 record. First-year coach Kevin Vasquez emphasized the need to celebrate their achievements despite the loss. “What an incredible season,” he stated. “I told the team, don’t let one game take anything away from what we did. It was truly a magical season.”

Marin Catholic entered the playoffs after claiming the MCAL title, defying pre-season predictions. Their path included a competitive performance in the North Coast Section open division playoffs, where they won one of two games before advancing to the NorCal D-I playoffs. The Wildcats had high hopes of continuing their success but faced a formidable opponent in King’s Academy, the defending D-III NorCal champions.

In a fierce contest, Marin Catholic initially took control, leading 40-37 at halftime thanks to the sharp shooting of Oliver Myers, who scored 11 of his team-high 16 points in the first half. However, King’s Academy showcased their skill, particularly from standout player Adrian Barnett, who led all scorers with 20 points and nine rebounds.

“We were confident coming into this game,” said Joe Hammond, the Wildcats’ senior captain. “But they were a very, very skilled team. They were definitely the most skilled team we played all season.” The Knights surged back in the second half, taking the lead late in the third quarter after a pivotal dunk from Barnett.

Marin Catholic managed to tie the game at 58-58 early in the fourth quarter, but King’s Academy responded with relentless offensive rebounds and fastbreak opportunities that allowed them to pull away in the closing minutes. “We lost to a very good team without a doubt,” Vasquez noted. “But we were ahead at halftime and then we couldn’t get a stop or make a shot.”

Other notable contributions came from senior Micah Pierce, who scored 10 points and led the team with six rebounds. Chase Williams added nine points, while Jack Herman and Bentley Morrow chipped in with eight and seven points, respectively.

After the game, emotions ran high in the locker room, with Vasquez addressing the disappointment. “There were a lot of sad kids in that locker room,” he admitted. “But when they are able to look back on the season without emotion, they are going to realize what they accomplished. The experience we got this season is going to pay dividends for years to come.”
