URGENT UPDATE: M&T Bank has just announced the closure of eight branches located within Stop & Shop stores across Connecticut, impacting local customers significantly. The closures are set to take effect by the end of April, as the bank adapts to evolving customer needs.

The affected branches—located at 2331 Dixwell Ave. in Hamden, 489 Bushy Hill Road in Simsbury, 200 E. Main St. in Stratford, and 50 Windsorville Road in Vernon—will shut down on April 16. The remaining branches at 4531 Main St. in Bridgeport, 1364 E. Town Road in Milford, 1790 Post Road East in Westport, and 5 River Road in Wilton will close on April 30.

M&T Bank, headquartered in New York, operates 155 branches and ATMs throughout the state. According to a bank spokesperson, the impacted locations will transition to standalone ATMs, marking a shift in how the bank serves its customers.

“We are committed to adapting our branch network to best serve our communities,” stated a representative from M&T Bank. The bank emphasizes that while some branches are closing, it is also leasing new standalone locations in both Torrington and Waterbury to enhance service offerings.

The closures will not lead to layoffs, as employees from affected branches will be offered positions at other nearby locations. M&T Bank employs approximately 2,100 people in Connecticut and ranks third in state deposits, following its merger with the former People’s United Bank in 2022.

M&T Bank regularly evaluates its branch network to align better with community needs. As customers increasingly favor digital banking options, the bank’s strategy focuses on providing best-in-class advice and guidance where it matters most.

Keep an eye on developments from M&T Bank as they roll out new branches and ATMs in the coming months. This change is part of a broader trend in the banking industry as institutions adapt to the dynamic landscape of consumer banking preferences.

Stay tuned for updates on how these closures will impact local communities and what M&T Bank’s next steps will be.
