NBA Stars Terry Rozier and Chauncey Billups Arrested in Betting Probe
UPDATE: In a shocking turn of events, NBA guard Terry Rozier of the Miami Heat and Chauncey Billups, head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, were arrested by the FBI early Thursday morning as part of a sweeping federal investigation into illegal sports betting. This serious development raises significant concerns about the integrity of professional sports amidst growing allegations of game manipulation.
Rozier was apprehended at a hotel in Orlando, Florida, where he was present for a game against the Orlando Magic. Notably, he did not participate in the game due to a coach’s decision. Meanwhile, Billups was arrested in Portland, Oregon, as the Blazers are currently between home games.
According to sources reported by CBS News, Rozier is linked to a sports betting ring involving current and former players, some of whom allegedly faked injuries to manipulate game outcomes. Billups is among 31 individuals charged for participating in illegal high-stakes poker games organized by figures in organized crime. The FBI is expected to provide further details at a press conference scheduled for 10 a.m. ET in New York.
The investigation has already seen the arrest of former NBA player Damon Jones and is part of a broader probe into illegal gambling activities that threaten the integrity of the league. Rozier, along with five others, faces charges in the betting ring case, as confirmed by ABC News.
The implications of these arrests are profound. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has called for tighter regulations surrounding sports betting to mitigate risks of game manipulation. In a recent appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Silver emphasized the need for betting companies to pull back on prop bets, particularly involving players with less at stake in the competition.
Recent data shows concerning betting patterns surrounding Rozier’s performance. On March 23, 2023, sportsbooks flagged unusual betting activity related to Rozier’s statistical props, with a professional bettor placing $13,759 in wagers on the under for Rozier’s points, rebounds, and assists. This prompted several sportsbooks to shut down prop betting on his performance.
Rozier’s attorney, Jim Trusty, stated that his client has cooperated with the FBI and NBA officials since the investigation began, maintaining his innocence. The federal probe also investigates former Toronto Raptors center Jontay Porter, banned from the NBA in 2024 for his involvement in a sports betting scandal.
As the investigation unfolds, the NBA faces mounting pressure to ensure the integrity of its games. Fans and stakeholders alike will be watching closely for updates following the scheduled press conference, where federal officials will reveal more details about these alarming developments.
The ramifications of these arrests extend beyond the court, affecting the lives and careers of those involved. As this story develops, it raises urgent questions about the future of sports betting and its impact on professional sports. Stay tuned for real-time updates as this situation evolves.
