Nicolas Cage’s Unique Role in ‘Spider-Noir’ Set for May Release
Nicolas Cage is set to star in a new Prime Video series titled Spider-Noir, which features a character inspired by the iconic Spider-Man. While Cage previously voiced a similar character in the animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, it is important to note that these portrayals are distinct from one another. Oren Uziel, the showrunner for Spider-Noir, emphasized that the character in the upcoming series is not a continuation of the animated portrayal.
Uziel clarified in an interview with Empire that both characters share a common voice due to Cage’s involvement, yet they belong to different universes. He stated, “Same character, different universe. It’s a different flavor of that character… I think you’re allowed to take things and make them your own.” This creative freedom is a result of the multiverse concept introduced by filmmakers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, enabling various interpretations of characters across different formats.
In Spider-Noir, the character voiced by Cage is identified as “Ben Reilly,” a variant of Spider-Man that audiences have encountered in other adaptations but not in Cage’s previous appearance. Uziel expressed the intention to craft “a version of Spider-Man that no one had ever seen before.” This approach is particularly relevant given the differing storytelling styles between animated films and live-action series.
The decision to create a unique character for Spider-Noir aims to avoid alienating viewers who may not be familiar with the animated films. Uziel noted that if a show requires prior knowledge to enjoy, it could deter potential viewers. By starting fresh, the series hopes to attract a wider audience.
Looking ahead, the possibility of crossovers remains open. The character from Spider-Noir could potentially appear in the upcoming animated sequel, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, set to release after the new film Spider-Man: Brand New Day. As these projects unfold, fans may anticipate exciting connections between the stories.
Spider-Noir is scheduled to premiere on MGM+ on May 25, 2024, followed by its release on Prime Video on May 27, 2024. As Cage takes on this new role, audiences can look forward to a fresh take on a beloved character, further expanding the Spider-Man multiverse.
