RCTC Falls Short in Tight Battle Against Riverland, 73-68
UPDATE: In a thrilling clash on January 17, 2024, the Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC) men’s basketball team narrowly fell to rival Riverland College, losing 73-68 at the UCR Regional Sports Center. This defeat halts RCTC’s two-game winning streak and marks an urgent moment of reflection for the team.
With just under seven minutes remaining, RCTC held a four-point lead, but Riverland launched a decisive 6-0 run that shifted the momentum permanently in their favor. The game remained tightly contested, with only a single possession separating the teams until the final seconds. Riverland secured a slim halftime lead of 33-30 and maintained their advantage through the second half.
Dominic Martinez-White shone for RCTC, contributing a season-high 19 points. His efforts were bolstered by Sam Hemery with 14 points, and John Johnson, who delivered 12 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists. Carson Brown also played a crucial role, recording five assists throughout the game.
Riverland showcased a balanced offense, with four players scoring in double figures. Tyson Helms and Isaiah Lindor led the charge with 16 points each, while Tristan Holmes added 13 points and 8 rebounds. Joe Poyser dominated the boards, finishing with a game-high 9 rebounds.
This victory propels Riverland to an impressive 16-1 overall record this season, their only loss occurring on December 13 in a double-overtime thriller against Central Lakes College. Meanwhile, RCTC now stands at 8-8 overall and is 0-1 in MCAC play, raising questions about their performance in the competitive conference.
As RCTC prepares for their next challenge, they will face St. Cloud Technical and Community College on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Mayo Civic Auditorium. This upcoming game is crucial as the Yellowjackets look to bounce back and regain their footing in the conference standings.
