San Diego Police Arrest Driver After High-Speed Chase on I-15
UPDATE: A dramatic vehicle pursuit in San Diego culminated yesterday with the arrest of a man on northbound Interstate 15, just south of Aero Drive, after police deployed a spike strip to disable his pickup truck. The chase began around 1:09 PM in Pacific Beach, following reports of a restraining order violation.
The incident started when officers attempted to pull over a Dodge Ram linked to a restraining order breach. According to Officer Anthony Carrasco, the pursuit escalated quickly as the driver recklessly maneuvered through traffic and even traveled the wrong way on a Mid-City street.
As the chase continued, it severely disrupted mid-day traffic, leading to significant delays and temporarily shutting down the Aero Drive off-ramp. Officers successfully caught up with the suspect on I-15 and strategically used a spike strip to deflate the truck’s tires, bringing the chase to a halt without any reported injuries or collisions.
Authorities have confirmed that the driver is facing serious charges, including violating a restraining order and felony evading under California’s Vehicle Code 2800.2. This law stipulates that reckless evading can be charged as a felony if the driver shows “willful or wanton disregard” for public safety, which could result in a state prison term.
While this event raises questions about the safety of police pursuits, the San Diego Police Department maintains that such measures are necessary to stop fleeing suspects. They emphasize that tools like spike strips are deployed only when it is deemed safe to do so.
Traffic delays are expected as crews continue to clear the scene. Drivers are advised to consider alternate routes and stay updated on current conditions.
Officials have not yet released the suspect’s name, and further updates will follow as the situation develops. This incident highlights the ongoing debate about police pursuit protocols and their implications for public safety.
Stay tuned for more details as authorities continue to investigate this incident.
