URGENT UPDATE: San Joaquin Delta College has officially closed its Stockton campus as of 5 p.m. Wednesday and will remain shut down all day Thursday, October 19, 2023. This decision comes after a significant heat outage rendered most campus buildings uninhabitable.

The closure occurs amid adverse weather conditions, with rain forecasted for Thursday morning and temperatures expected to hit a chilly 51 degrees. The National Weather Service also reports gusty south winds ranging from 11 to 13 mph and gusts reaching up to 26 mph.

This closure impacts all scheduled events, classes, and services at the campus, marking the third time since January that heating issues have disrupted operations. Earlier this year, a leak in the hydronic heating lines was identified as the cause of a similar outage on January 23. Recent assessments have revealed a new leak in an underground pipe, exacerbating the situation.

Officials have not provided a confirmed timeline for when heat will be restored. A repair company is set to evaluate the problem on Thursday. In light of the disruption, faculty members have been instructed to transition classes online whenever feasible and to communicate directly with students via email. Employees who are able to work from home are expected to do so on Thursday.

The college will issue further updates as more information becomes available regarding the campus’s operations after Thursday. The community is urged to stay tuned for the latest developments on this urgent matter.

As the situation unfolds, students and staff are feeling the impact of this unexpected closure, with many expressing concerns over the repeated disruptions in a vital learning environment.
