Sweden’s Team Hasselborg Claims Thrilling Curling Gold in Italy
UPDATE: In a gripping final, Sweden’s Team Hasselborg clinched a 6-5 victory over Switzerland on February 18, 2024, at the Cortina Curling Olympic Stadium. This remarkable win makes them the first women’s team to secure three Olympic medals overall, following their gold in Pyeongchang 2018 and bronze in Beijing 2022.
After a challenging journey marked by significant life changes, including three pregnancies among team members in 2023, Team Hasselborg overcame the odds to triumph at these Olympics. They were not considered favorites heading into the competition, but their determination led to a strong performance, highlighted by a title at the European Curling Championships in November.
The final match was a nail-biter. Sweden started strong with a two-point lead, but Switzerland, under the skillful leadership of Silvana Tirinzoni, fought back fiercely. By the sixth end, Alina Paetz’s precise throws allowed Switzerland to equalize at 3-3, shifting the momentum. However, Hasselborg’s strategic play proved decisive. In a critical moment, she stole a point, applying pressure back on Switzerland.
Reflecting on the tension of the match, Hasselborg stated,
“Starting with the hammer was huge, we knew they would throw a lot of offensive shots at us. But we wanted to go hard, and we got that two in the first. It was such a tight game.”
In a thrilling finish, Hasselborg confidently secured the final point with the help of exceptional shots from teammates Agnes Knochenhauer and Sara McManus. Knochenhauer, now tied with compatriot Oskar Eriksson as the only curlers with four Olympic medals, expressed gratitude, saying,
“That feels amazing. I couldn’t do anything of this without the team and without the families.”
Earlier in the competition, Team Hasselborg had already made headlines by defeating the world’s top-ranked team, Canada, in the semifinals. The emotional stakes were high as they battled back from a series of setbacks over the past Olympic cycle, demonstrating resilience and skill.
In the bronze medal match held just a day prior, Rachel Homan led Canada to a victory over the United States with a score of 10-7, ensuring a strong finish for the Canadian team.
This victory for Team Hasselborg not only cements their legacy in curling but also showcases the power of perseverance and teamwork in overcoming personal and professional challenges.
As the excitement continues from Cortina d’Ampezzo, fans and supporters are encouraged to celebrate this historic achievement and share in the pride of Swedish curling excellence. Expect more updates as the Olympics progress!
