Urgent Alert: Skunk Mating Season Begins, Watch for Hazards!

UPDATE: Skunk mating season is now underway, prompting the Wildlife Center of Virginia to issue an urgent warning for residents across the Eastern U.S. to remain vigilant while driving, especially during the twilight hours. From January through mid-March, these nocturnal mammals leave their territories in search of mates, increasing their nighttime activity and the potential for dangerous road encounters.

As Valentine’s Day approaches, humans are not the only ones seeking love. Male skunks can travel several miles each night, greatly heightening the risk of them being struck by vehicles. Authorities confirm that the skunk population in Virginia is robust, thriving in diverse habitats from the mountains to the coast.

The state is home to two primary skunk subspecies: the common striped skunk, which can reach about 2 feet long, and the smaller Eastern spotted skunk, often found in western regions of the state. Connor Gillespie, spokesperson for the Wildlife Center of Virginia, noted, “There’s only been one Eastern spotted skunk that has come into the center during my time, out of probably 10,000 animals that I’ve seen come through our doors.”

Both skunk varieties possess a powerful defense mechanism: a foul-smelling spray that can accurately reach targets up to 15 feet away. The Wildlife Center advises residents to take precautions, as the odor from skunk spray is notoriously difficult to eliminate. For those who may come into contact with the spray, the center recommends a cleaning solution made from 3% hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and liquid soap.

Skunks are known to raise their young, called kits, in burrows, often finding shelter under porches or in crawl spaces. Gillespie warns that now is the time to take proactive measures to prevent skunks from moving onto your property. “It’s a lot easier to prevent it now than having to deal with the situation once a skunk has already moved in,” he said.

Residents are encouraged to keep an eye out for these animals as they roam more freely in search of love. The Wildlife Center of Virginia provides guidance on humane prevention methods on its website, wildlifecenter.org.

Stay alert and share this information with friends and family to ensure everyone is prepared for the skunk mating season. As the wildlife community emphasizes, awareness is key to avoiding unwanted encounters during this fragrant time of year.
