Urgent Call for Artists: Mural Project at Elyria City Hall

URGENT UPDATE: The Elyria Community Partnership has officially launched a call for artists to create a striking mural on the exterior wall of Elyria City Hall, facing Ely Square and the nearby Huntington building. This initiative, announced just moments ago, aims to celebrate Elyria’s rich history while envisioning its vibrant future.

Officials are seeking artists who can weave Elyria’s past into a compelling narrative through public art. Monet Roberts-Walton, Executive Director of the Elyria Community Partnership, shared the vision: “We’re really looking for an artist who can respect Elyria’s past while also helping us tell a story about where we’re headed.”

The selected artist will engage in a highly collaborative process, working closely with city administration, City Council members, and a focus group that includes local youth. This inclusive approach is designed to ensure the mural authentically represents the community’s voice.

Artists from local, regional, and national backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Interested candidates must have experience with large-scale murals. Although specific themes are not mandated, potential inspiration includes cultural heritage, nature, realism, mixed media, and bold abstract styles. The application deadline is February 10, 2024, at noon.

Roberts-Walton emphasized the importance of this project, stating, “Art creates a sense of value and pride. It shows residents and investors that this is a place that cares about itself and is worth investing in.” The mural’s completion is targeted for later this year, aligning with America’s 250th anniversary celebrations and the city’s summer programming.
