Urgent: Cartel Violence Erupts in Mexico After El Mencho’s Death
UPDATE: Chaos erupts in Mexico as multiple airlines cancel flights following the reported death of notorious drug lord Nemesio Oseguera, known as El Mencho. The violence has led to immediate flight cancellations to popular destinations like Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara, creating panic among travelers.
Earlier today, Mexican military operations targeting El Mencho reportedly resulted in his death, prompting violent clashes across the region. In response, United Airlines confirmed cancellations of all flights to and from PVR and GDL, stating, “Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers.” Southwest Airlines followed suit, scrapping its scheduled flights, while American Airlines announced cancellations for flights to Guadalajara, Mazatlán, and Puerto Vallarta for the remainder of today, February 22, 2026.
Travelers are advised to stay vigilant as violence sweeps through the popular resort area. Eyewitness reports from Guadalajara International Airport depict scenes of panic, with travelers running for safety amid smoke and unrest. Many passengers remain stranded due to the lack of transportation options as the situation continues to escalate.
The U.S. Embassy has issued shelter-in-place advisories across multiple states in Mexico, warning of potential further clashes in Jalisco. Government officials have deemed this violence a direct response to the military’s actions, which targeted the leader of the Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generación—a group identified by U.S. authorities as a significant supplier of fentanyl.
El Mencho, who once commanded a $15 million bounty, rose to infamy after the arrest of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. Over the past 15 years, his cartel expanded from a regional player to a global trafficking organization.
U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau expressed the significance of this operation on social media, stating, “This is a great development for Mexico, the U.S., and Latin America. The good guys are stronger than the bad guys.”
As the situation unfolds, travelers should remain alert and monitor updates from their airlines. Airlines are currently offering travel waivers for affected passengers, allowing them to rebook without incurring fees.
Stay tuned for more updates as authorities continue to assess the impact of this volatile situation.
