Urgent: Iran’s Threats Escalate as Federal Authorities Warn of Attacks
UPDATE: Federal authorities have issued a dire warning about potential retaliatory strikes on American soil from Iran. With tensions escalating following the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on February 28, 2024, officials caution that Iran may utilize sleeper cells, lone wolf sympathizers, or even cyberattacks against U.S. targets.
The urgency of this situation is underscored by intercepted communications that suggest Iran is mobilizing its assets. In a chilling broadcast detected globally, cryptic messages using the Persian word for “attention” were transmitted, followed by a sequence of numbers that could serve as an operational trigger for sleeper agents within the United States.
Authorities have confirmed the transmission, described as “likely of Iranian origin,” raises significant alarm. Despite the lack of a specific credible threat, a memo from the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security urges local law enforcement to remain vigilant.
Former LAPD counterterrorism chief Horace Frank stated, “Sleeper cells have always been a concern when it comes to Iranians and their proxies…some of their proxies are feeling a lot more desperate.” The FBI’s heightened state of alert began with the launch of Operation Epic Fury alongside U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
The threat extends beyond sleeper agents. Iranian-linked plots have included attempts to assassinate high-profile U.S. officials, such as former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former National Security Advisor John Bolton. Recent legal actions have seen Iranian operatives charged in various murder-for-hire conspiracies, illustrating the ongoing risk.
In a related incident, Asif Raza Merchant was convicted in a 2024 murder-for-hire plot targeting former President Donald Trump and others, showcasing the alarming trend of radicalized individuals acting on behalf of foreign interests. Merchant was trained by Iranian forces and aimed to recruit local criminals for violent acts.
The landscape of threats has dramatically shifted since the September 11 attacks. Authorities are now actively monitoring potential lone wolf attacks, with incidents like the San Bernardino shooting serving as stark reminders of domestic radicalization.
Recent violence in Austin, Texas, involving Ndiaga Diagne, who killed three people and injured 13 while espousing allegiance to Iran, further highlights the escalating danger. Investigators are probing potential links to terrorism.
Counterterrorism experts are also scrutinizing Iran’s proxy groups, including Hezbollah, which has a significant foothold in Latin America. Authorities are increasingly concerned that these groups may exploit the current turmoil to launch attacks on U.S. soil.
Moreover, cybersecurity threats from Iranian hackers remain a critical concern. Experts report that following the military strikes on February 28, Iran’s internet connectivity plummeted, indicating U.S. cyber operations have disrupted their communication capabilities.
In response to these escalating threats, local law enforcement agencies are being urged to strengthen their counterterrorism measures. The Los Angeles Police Department is employing lessons learned from past attacks to enhance security protocols, especially in regions with large Iranian-American populations.
The situation remains fluid, and authorities are calling on the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity. As this story develops, the emphasis on national security and public safety remains paramount.
Stay tuned for further updates as federal agencies continue to monitor the situation closely.
