Urgent: Montco Law Enforcement Responds to Rising ICE Activity

UPDATE: High-ranking law enforcement officials in Montgomery County are urgently addressing rising tensions following a surge in federal immigration operations. Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele and Abington Township Police Chief Patrick Molloy have just released a joint statement outlining their policies amidst growing community concerns regarding recent ICE-related events.

In a statement, Molloy and Steele emphasized their commitment to safety: “The entire Montgomery County law enforcement community is united in our mission to uphold the rule of law and ensure Montgomery County remains a safe place to live and work.” This response comes after an alarming raid in Trooper, where federal agents detained a man during a standoff that left community members shocked and a family member injured.

Montgomery County Sheriff Sean Kilkenny also issued a separate statement, asserting that the “security of all Montgomery County residents is paramount.” He highlighted the importance of trust within the community, stressing that all residents should feel safe when interacting with law enforcement.

The recent events have heightened anxiety among Montgomery County’s estimated 868,742 residents, many of whom are immigrants. Approximately 10.8 percent of the population was born outside the United States, with over 100,000 immigrants residing in the area. Norristown, the county seat, has a significant Hispanic or Latino population, comprising 32.9 percent of its 35,769 residents.

Montco Community Watch, a grassroots organization, reports over 100 detentions since June 2025, raising alarms about federal agents’ aggressive immigration enforcement. Advocates are demanding transparency, as an ICE spokesperson has not revealed local detainment figures.

In a joint statement, Molloy and Steele reassured the public, “Our protocol during any use of force event is for local law enforcement to respond immediately. This includes ensuring safety, providing first aid, and securing the crime scene.” They also confirmed that investigations will be conducted to determine if any laws were violated, regardless of the agency involved.

Public demonstrations against ICE actions have intensified, reflecting widespread concern over federal immigration policies. “We are devoted to ensuring that residents can peacefully assemble and protest,” Molloy and Steele stated, while also warning that interference with law enforcement will not be tolerated.

Local law enforcement agencies reiterated their stance, clarifying that they do not enforce civil immigration orders and that warrants must be judicially sanctioned. Montgomery County Commissioners, including Chairwoman Jamila Winder, have committed to not signing agreements that would allow local police to perform immigration enforcement duties.

Community advocates continue to push for local policies that protect undocumented immigrants, despite the challenges posed by the county’s 2A County status, which limits local governance. Residents have repeatedly called for a Welcoming Policy to ensure consistent protections across the county.
