UPDATE: A tragic crash in rural Weld County has been linked to speeding and texting, resulting in the death of 20-year-old Kaylee Russell. Authorities confirmed that Russell was driving at a staggering 60 mph — well above the 25 mph limit — when she lost control of her vehicle on December 4, 2023.

New findings from the Colorado State Patrol reveal that Russell was using her phone to send text messages shortly before the fatal incident. The investigation indicates that she was approaching a left curve on Larimer County Road 1 in her Volkswagen Tiguan when she failed to navigate the turn, veering off the road. The vehicle then collided with a utility marker and rolled into a canal, landing on its roof and partially submerged in water.

Authorities suspect that impaired driving due to marijuana use also contributed to the accident. Toxicology results confirmed the presence of marijuana in Russell’s system at the time of the crash.

Russell was reported missing on November 30, prompting a search by concerned family and friends that lasted several days. The discovery of her vehicle and the subsequent investigation have left the community in shock and mourning.

The Colorado State Patrol has emphasized the dangers of distracted and impaired driving, urging all motorists to remain vigilant and avoid using their phones while behind the wheel. This tragic event serves as a sobering reminder of the consequences of reckless behavior on the road.

As the investigation continues, authorities will be focusing on raising awareness about safe driving practices to prevent further tragedies. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
