Urgent Winter Storm Alert: Lynn Braces for 20 Inches of Snow
UPDATE: A significant winter storm is set to hit Lynn, Massachusetts, with forecasts predicting 15 to 20 inches of snow starting late tonight, according to city officials. The storm is expected to peak Monday morning between 6 a.m. and noon, creating extremely hazardous driving conditions.
In a critical Zoom meeting this morning, Mayor Jared C. Nicholson led a team of 20 representatives from various city departments to strategize for the impending weather. DPW Commissioner Andy Hall conveyed urgent warnings about the storm, urging residents to take precautions. “The driving will be very dangerous,” Hall stated, recommending a parking ban to commence at 6 p.m. tonight to facilitate snow removal.
Residents are advised to relocate their vehicles to designated lots starting at 4 p.m.. Failure to comply will result in towing, with vehicles moved to the EDIC’s Lynn Ferry parking lot on Blossom Street Extension to ensure clear streets for snowplows.
In addition to the snow, there are concerns about coastal flooding, with 15 to 25-foot seas expected. Emergency Management officials indicated that Lynn Shore Drive may need to be closed due to flooding risks, while powerful winds of 40 to 60 knots could lead to widespread power outages.
Schools in the area will also be affected; Superintendent Molly Cohen confirmed that classes will be canceled on Monday, with decisions regarding Tuesday to be made based on the storm’s impact. Both KIPP Academy and North Shore Community College will follow suit, closing their doors for safety.
City Councilor Brian Field engaged in discussions about the logistics of the parking ban, and all parties agreed that the 6 p.m. start time is essential for public safety.
“This seems to be an intensive storm,” Mayor Nicholson remarked, emphasizing the collaborative effort from all departments. “We appreciate everyone’s help, and we’ll get through it.”
Residents are urged to stay tuned for updates as the storm approaches. The city is committed to ensuring public safety and minimizing disruptions during this severe weather event.
As winter storms pose significant challenges, officials stress the importance of preparedness. Mayor Nicholson highlighted, “Winter storms are an inconvenience to everyone, especially those who must temporarily move their cars off the streets. Our team is focused on delivering the best possible support for our community.”
Stay alert and share this critical information with others to ensure everyone’s safety during the storm.
