Victoria Black History Festival Returns After 5-Year Break
URGENT UPDATE: The Victoria Black History Festival is back after a five-year hiatus, celebrating a century of Black American history. Just confirmed, the festival kicked off on January 27, 2024, honoring the legacy of historian Carter G. Woodson, who established “Negro History Week” in 1926. This year marks a pivotal moment as the community embraces its rich cultural heritage in Victoria, Texas.
The festivities began with a vibrant community parade, showcasing local marching bands, dance clubs, and historic floats. Residents lined the streets, eager to witness a living timeline of Black achievements and contributions to America, culminating at the Victoria Community Center Annex.
“We did our best to make it happen,” said Gordon Williams, a member of the Black History Steering Committee and chairman of the parade. He emphasized the importance of educating younger generations about their shared American identity.
The Black History Steering Committee, a non-profit organization, aims to enrich the Victoria community by planning and promoting events during Black History Month. Their mission is to bring together families, local businesses, and artists to celebrate the richness of Black heritage.
“It’s vital to have these events to showcase the achievements of previous generations,” stated Doc Brown, President of the 9th and 10th Horse Cavalry National Association Houston Chapter. He highlighted the significance of the Buffalo Soldiers, who played a crucial role in U.S. history, asserting that their contributions were instrumental to America’s development.
The festival serves as a reminder that Black history is integral to American history. It highlights the laborers who built railroads, the soldiers who fought for freedom, and the educators and entrepreneurs who shaped the community. This celebration reinforces that the story of Victoria cannot be told without acknowledging the experiences and achievements of its Black residents.
As the festival continues, attendees can look forward to various educational panels and performances celebrating Black culture. The Black History Steering Committee urges everyone to participate and reflect on the progress made over the last century.
This festival not only marks a return to tradition but also sets the stage for an annual celebration of Black history in Victoria, ensuring that the contributions of Black Americans are recognized and honored for generations to come.
Stay tuned for more updates as the festival unfolds, and join the community in celebrating this important chapter in history!
