World Cup Ticket Prices Soar as Resale Market Takes Off
The resale market for tickets to the 2026 World Cup is experiencing extraordinary price inflation, prompting concerns among fans ahead of the tournament set to take place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. According to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, many fans who have secured tickets may attempt to resell them at significant profit, contributing to soaring costs on secondary platforms.
Infantino highlighted the unprecedented demand for this year’s event, noting that FIFA would need to conduct a draw to allocate tickets due to overwhelming interest. He acknowledged that resale prices could exceed their original values. On FIFA’s own resale marketplace, tickets for the final have reached listings as high as $230,000 this week. Although FIFA does not set prices or resell tickets directly, it benefits from a 30% commission on secondary sales.
Demand and Pricing Challenges
During a discussion at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Infantino stated that in the U.S., “it is perfectly legal to resell tickets on resale platforms.” He emphasized that all 104 matches at the World Cup would be sold out, creating a high likelihood that the tickets would be resold at inflated prices.
He remarked, “In nearly 100 years of World Cup history, FIFA has sold around 50 million tickets in total. Now, for this World Cup, we have requests equivalent to 1,000 years of World Cups at once. This is unique. It’s incredible.”
As ticket prices escalate, many fans are expressing frustration over the pricing strategies employed by FIFA. The organization is charging up to $8,680 per ticket, but amid backlash, it announced that it would offer a limited number of tickets priced at $60 for every game to the 48 national federations participating in the tournament.
Prices can skyrocket on resale platforms, often exceeding multiples of the original face value. For instance, a Category 1 ticket for the final at MetLife Stadium on July 19, 2026, is listed at $8,680, but resale listings this week show prices beginning at $16,000, nearly double the original price.
Fan Reactions and FIFA’s Stance
Criticism has emerged from various fan groups, with Football Supporters Europe accusing FIFA of a “monumental betrayal” regarding ticket pricing. Ronan Evain, executive director of FSE, stated, “A significant proportion of tickets that are sold and put on the resale platform are there just for profit.”
FIFA has defended its pricing model, asserting that it aligns with market practices for major sporting events in North America. In a statement to the Associated Press, FIFA explained that its resale fees are consistent with industry trends and aim to ensure fair access to the game for all fans.
The governing body’s approach contrasts sharply with its policies during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where it controlled resale prices and charged lower fees. This year, sellers on FIFA’s platform determine prices, potentially leading to further inflation as demand continues to surge.
Infantino acknowledged the backlash he received regarding ticket prices, particularly from fans in Germany and England. He noted that despite criticism, the demand for tickets is high, with the U.S. topping the list of requests.
As preparations for the 2026 World Cup continue, the ticket pricing scenario reflects the growing pressures of a global sporting event, where fan enthusiasm clashes with market realities. The situation underscores the complexities of ticket distribution and the impact of resale markets, leaving many fans anxious about their chances to attend one of the world’s most celebrated sporting events.
