BAFTA Honors Clare Binns with Outstanding Contribution Award

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) announced on Monday that Clare Binns, the creative director of Picturehouse Cinemas and Picturehouse Entertainment, will receive the prestigious Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema Award at the upcoming 2026 EE BAFTA Film Awards. The ceremony is scheduled for February 22, 2026, in London. This award is one of BAFTA’s highest honors, recognizing significant contributions to the film industry, particularly from individuals or organizations that may not fit into BAFTA’s competitive categories.

Over her remarkable four-decade career, Binns has established herself as a key figure in the U.K. film landscape, known for championing diverse and independent cinema across the country. BAFTA highlighted her role in promoting the works of acclaimed filmmakers such as Danny Boyle, Steve McQueen, and Francis Lee, while also showcasing notable films like God’s Own Country and The Wife.

Binns has implemented various initiatives aimed at attracting new audiences to cinemas. These include relaxed screenings for families, special events for seniors, and even dog-friendly showings, which have helped integrate local communities into the cinematic experience. Additionally, Binns has expanded Picturehouse’s outreach efforts through partnerships with organizations like Brixton Soup Kitchen and Poetic Unity at The Ritzy Picturehouse. Picturehouse has also collaborated with the charity Refuge, which supports victims of domestic violence, hosting fundraisers and raising awareness for its mission.

Emily Stillman, chair of BAFTA’s film committee, praised Binns’ profound impact on the British film industry, calling her a “hugely talented and beloved visionary.” Stillman emphasized Binns’ commitment to bringing a wide range of stories to the big screen and her dedication to supporting emerging independent filmmakers.

In response to the announcement, Binns expressed her surprise and gratitude. “I was totally blown away when I heard that I was getting this award. I’m so thrilled not just for myself but for everyone who has worked with me throughout my career and for those who continue to support the mission to welcome audiences into local cinemas across the U.K.,” she stated.

The 2026 BAFTA Film Awards will also feature nominations for other films, with One Battle After Another leading the recently revealed longlists, followed by Hamnet and Sinners. As the film industry continues to evolve, Binns’ contributions stand out as a testament to the power of cinema in fostering community and diversity in storytelling.
