The Boeing 747, once a staple of the aviation industry, is now a rare sight among scheduled passenger flights. In recent years, the number of operators using this iconic aircraft has dwindled, with only a select few still flying the 747-400 and 747-8 variants. While the aircraft is predominantly known for long-haul flights, current data from Cirium, an aviation analytics company, reveals that the Boeing 747 also serves several short routes, including some that are under 700 miles.

Shortest Routes in 2026

According to Cirium, the shortest scheduled passenger flight utilizing a Boeing 747 this year is the 664-mile route from Moscow Sheremetyevo International Airport (SVO) to Kaliningrad (KGD). Two Aeroflot flights operated by Rossiya Airlines in January employed high-density Boeing 747-400 jets, each accommodating 522 passengers. Following closely is the 667-mile domestic corridor from Beijing Capital Airport (PEK) to Shanghai Hongqiao Airport (SHA). This route has seen 289 rotations scheduled with the Boeing 747-400 and 489 with the newer 747-8 model.

He Li, Vice President of Air China, noted during the airline’s order of the 747-8 in 2011 that Air China has been flying 747s since the 1980s, emphasizing the aircraft’s efficiency and passenger experience.

Additional Short Routes Across Asia

In addition to the aforementioned flights, Korean Air operates its Boeing 747 family aircraft on three additional short routes from Seoul Incheon Airport (ICN) to Tokyo Narita (NRT), Taipei (TPE), and Hong Kong (HKG). These routes measure 783 miles (1,260 km), 907 miles (1,460 km), and 1,284 miles (2,066 km), respectively. The 747-8 is used for these services, although their frequency is not as high as Air China’s flights between Beijing and Shanghai. From January to March, Korean Air operated 14 round trips to Taipei, while Hong Kong saw six rotations and Tokyo limited to just three round trips.

Within the Chinese market, Air China also offers two more domestic routes that slightly exceed the 1,000-mile mark. The Beijing to Guangzhou route measures 1,165 miles (1,875 km), with 569 rotations scheduled for the 747-8 and 178 for the 747-400. The route from Beijing to Shenzhen is slightly longer at 1,212 miles (1,951 km), having 369 scheduled rotations with the 747-400.

Despite challenges facing the aging fleet, some airlines continue to find ways to operate the Boeing 747 profitably.

As we examine the shorter routes served by the Boeing 747, it is important to note that the subsequent entries in the list of shortest scheduled passenger flights are significantly longer. The eighth and ninth positions are occupied by two transcontinental routes from Moscow Sheremetyevo to Blagoveshchensk (BQS) and Magadan (GDX), measuring 3,486 miles (5,610 km) and 3,653 miles (5,879 km), respectively. These routes are also operated by Rossiya Airlines on behalf of Aeroflot, with 102 rotations to Blagoveshchensk and 230 to Magadan scheduled this year.

The final entry in the top ten is a 3,670-mile (5,906 km) Lufthansa route from Frankfurt (FRA) to Boston (BOS), set to be served 237 times this year with the Boeing 747-400, alongside a single round trip with the 747-8 planned for April 1.

As the aviation industry evolves, the Boeing 747 remains a fascinating aspect of air travel, illustrating how some airlines are adapting to maintain its legacy even on shorter routes.
