Dubai to Build World’s First Gold-Paved Street in Deira

In a bold move to elevate its status as a luxury destination, Dubai has announced plans to create the world’s first gold-paved street. This initiative is part of the new Dubai Gold District, located in Deira, which is home to the renowned Gold Souk, one of the emirate’s oldest traditional markets. By transforming this area, Dubai aims to further solidify its reputation as the “City of Gold” and attract both tourists and industry professionals.

The gold-paved street will be a centerpiece of the Dubai Gold District, which will feature over 1,000 shops offering a variety of luxury goods, including gold jewellery, perfumes, cosmetics, and high-end designer items. Notable local and international brands will participate in this retail hub, including Joyalukkas, which operates two branches in London and plans to launch a flagship store in the new district. Additionally, six new hotels are planned, which will add approximately 1,000 rooms to the area, further enhancing its appeal to visitors.

While the gold street is a significant aspect of the development, details about other features of the district remain largely undisclosed. Further announcements are expected in the coming months, as the project progresses.

Dubai is no stranger to ambitious construction projects. Earlier this month, plans were revealed for the £730 million Dubai Creek Tower, intended to surpass the height of the Burj Khalifa, currently the tallest building in the world. Mohamed Ali Alabbar, founder of Emaar Properties, expressed the company’s commitment to innovation and excellence in construction during the Dubai International Project Management Forum. He stated, “We built the Burj Khalifa and continue to enhance it—most recently by upgrading its lighting. As Dubai reaches extraordinary heights, words are not enough. We must build something truly special.”

The Dubai Creek Tower project, initially slated for construction before the COVID-19 pandemic, faced delays but is now set to move forward. The tender for this monumental structure is expected to be offered within three months, with design changes having been implemented since its initial announcement.

While Dubai’s ambitious projects continue to draw attention, neighboring Saudi Arabia is also in the race to claim the title of the world’s tallest building with the planned Jeddah Tower. This skyscraper is designed to reach a height of 1,000 meters (approximately 0.6 miles), forming part of the larger Kingdom City project, which has a budget exceeding £20 billion.

In light of these developments, living in Dubai has sparked conversations among expatriates, particularly for those from the UK. A recent video shared by a Dubai expat highlighted challenges faced by British residents, including soaring rents and the harsh summer climate. The YouTuber, who has lived in Dubai for over four years, noted that his rent has doubled during his time in the city, alongside a longing for familiar comforts such as traditional fish and chip shops.

As Dubai continues to innovate and expand its luxury offerings, the city remains a focal point for both investment and tourism in the region. The gold-paved street is just one of many projects that aim to enhance its allure as a global destination.
