Explosive Device Destroys Car of Investigative Journalist Ranucci
An explosive device detonated under the car of prominent Italian investigative journalist Sigfrido Ranucci outside his home in Pomezia, south of Rome, on the night of October 20, 2023. The explosion destroyed Ranucci’s vehicle and caused damage to a second family car and a nearby house. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The investigative program Report, which Ranucci anchors, stated that the blast was powerful enough to potentially harm anyone passing by at the time.
In response to this incident, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her solidarity with Ranucci and condemned the attack as a “serious act of intimidation.” In a statement, she emphasized the critical importance of freedom and independence in journalism, stating, “These are essential values of our democracies, which we will continue to defend.”
The incident highlights the dangers faced by investigative journalists in Italy, where threats and violence against media professionals are of growing concern. Report is known for its rigorous investigative journalism, often exposing corruption and misconduct among prominent Italian politicians and business leaders. Just days before the attack, Ranucci had been cleared in a defamation case stemming from one of the program’s reports, underscoring the contentious environment in which he operates.
Authorities, including police and forensic crews, are currently investigating the incident. The severity of the explosion has raised alarms about the safety of journalists in the region and the broader implications for press freedom in Italy.
As the investigation unfolds, the journalism community and public figures continue to rally around Ranucci, calling for accountability and enhanced protections for journalists. The attack serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by those committed to uncovering the truth and holding power to account.
