The 51st César Awards celebrated the best of French cinema on March 15, 2026, at the Olympia theater in Paris. Carine Tardieu’s family drama The Ties That Bind Us, adapted from Alice Ferney’s novel L’Intimité, triumphed over Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague to win the prestigious title of Best Film. The film also garnered accolades for Best Adapted Screenplay and saw Vimala Pons take home the César for Best Supporting Actress.

Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague, a black-and-white exploration of the making of Jean-Luc Godard’s classic Breathless, received the award for Best Director, along with recognition for Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, and Best Editing. It entered the ceremony as a frontrunner with ten nominations and was acquired by Netflix during its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.

The night also recognized stellar performances, with Laurent Lafitte winning Best Actor for his role alongside Isabelle Huppert in Thierry Khifla’s comedy-drama The Richest Woman in the World, which draws inspiration from the 2010 Bettencourt Affair. Léa Drucker was honored as Best Actress for her leading role in Dominik Moll’s procedural Case 137.

Winners and Notable Highlights

Stéphane Demoustier’s The Great Arch, a biographical drama featuring Claes Bang, secured awards for Best Production Design and Best Visual Effects. In the category of Best First Feature, Nino by Pauline Loquès won, while its lead, Canadian actor Théodore Pellerin, was recognized as Best Male Newcomer.

The animated feature Arco, produced by Natalie Portman, won accolades for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score. Additionally, Paul Thomas Anderson’s film One Battle After Another was awarded Best International Film, outperforming titles such as The Secret Agent and Black Dog.

The ceremony also paid tribute to the late French icon Brigitte Bardot, who passed away on December 28, 2025. A retrospective reel highlighted her influential career, showcasing scenes from classics such as And God Created Woman (1956) and Contempt (1963).

In a memorable moment, Canadian actor Jim Carrey received the honorary César for lifetime achievement. Speaking in French, he reflected on his heritage, noting that his ancestor, Marc-François Carré, emigrated from France to Canada over 300 years ago.
