Harmony Korine, renowned for his provocative films such as Kids and Spring Breakers, is venturing into the world of webcomics with his latest project, Katch. This anime-inspired webtoon, developed by his Miami-based creative studio EDGLRD, represents Korine’s first foray into this digital medium.

Launching on WEBTOON, the global platform for webcomics, Katch tells the story of “a young ocean obsessive drawn into a hidden world beneath the sea, where a secret society hunts leviathans rising from the abyss.” The project features illustrations by Laura Sakuraki, colors by Ling Chen, and a prologue written by Daylen Seu. Utilizing a mixed-media production process, Katch incorporates computer-generated tools, animated panels, and interactive musical elements across select chapters.

EDGLRD’s Ambitious Expansion

Founded in 2022, EDGLRD—pronounced “edgelord”—has quickly established itself at the intersection of film, gaming, fashion, and generative technology. Korine’s studio made a notable impact at the Venice Film Festival in 2023 with the release of AGGRO DR1FT, an 80-minute project featuring Travis Scott. This unique work was shot entirely with thermal lenses, designed to provide an experience more akin to a game than a traditional film. Korine described it as an immersive artwork rather than a conventional movie, emphasizing his desire to explore the convergence of various media formats.

In 2024, Korine returned to Venice with another innovative project titled Baby Invasion. This hybrid film-videogame further advanced his experimentation with artificial intelligence and interactive aesthetics, utilizing Runway’s generative tools to create unsettling visuals featuring baby masks. As a result of this collaboration, EDGLRD and Runway established a formal first-look deal, announced in spring 2023, allowing EDGLRD to integrate Runway’s technology across its films and projects.

A New Chapter in Digital Storytelling

Katch marks a significant step for EDGLRD as it becomes the first narrative project to debut as a serialized webtoon, tailored for a mobile-first audience. The company describes the title as the beginning of its ongoing exploration into anime-inspired storytelling and hybrid digital work.

EDGLRD’s Chief Commercial Officer, Alon Soran, remarked on the creative potential this technology unlocks, stating, “This opens up all kinds of creative output—visual styles and identities that haven’t been explored before.” Soran emphasized that the use of generative tools allows artists to translate their imaginative concepts into reality instantly.

With Katch, Korine continues to push the boundaries of creativity, demonstrating that his artistic ambitions extend beyond traditional film and television formats. As EDGLRD evolves, it sets the stage for a unique blend of storytelling that resonates with a diverse and global readership.
