IDF Reopens Zikim Beach After October 7 Assault

Zikim Beach, located near the Gaza border, will open to the public for the first time since the tragic events of October 7, 2023. On that day, Hamas militants launched a coordinated attack on civilians and military personnel, resulting in the deaths of 17 individuals. The beach has been a closed military zone since the onset of the conflict, but following an operational assessment, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced its reopening, effective Thursday.

The decision, made by IDF Chief of General Staff, Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir, reflects a significant step towards rehabilitating the area, which has endured extensive violence. This reopening was coordinated with the Ashkelon Regional Council and follows what the IDF described as “significant operational activities” by troops under the Southern Command in northern Gaza. These efforts have included structured combat operations conducted by the Israeli Navy.

On October 7, Hamas infiltrated the naval barrier using several speedboats, targeting beachgoers and raiding a nearby military base. The attack resulted in substantial casualties and prompted immediate military responses. Since then, the beach has undergone considerable renovations to ensure safety for returning visitors. According to the IDF, “every effort was made to ensure that the beach is opened to the public in the safest and most effective manner.”

Construction efforts to restore Zikim Beach commenced in April 2024, with the Tekuma “Rebirth” Council allocating approximately NIS 4 million for the beachside renovation, part of a broader NIS 15 million funding package designated for the Ashkelon Regional Council. Local authorities view the reopening as a symbolic milestone in the journey to restore normalcy in the Tekuma region, emphasizing the resilience of the community in the wake of the October 7 onslaught.

The IDF has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of residents in the western Negev, stating that its operations will continue as necessary to protect the local population.
