Ilia Malinin Leads Team USA to Victory Over Japan for Gold Medal
American figure skaters achieved a remarkable victory at the Olympic Games on February 4, 2024, by defeating Japan to win the gold medal in the team event. The competition showcased the skill and determination of the United States team, culminating in an exhilarating performance anchored by Ilia Malinin, known as the “Quad God.”
The event opened with the pairs team of Ellie Kam and Danny O’Shea, who delivered a solid performance despite a few minor errors. Their free skate earned them fourth place among the five finalists, meeting the expectations set for them and setting the stage for the rest of the competition.
Japan’s Kaori Sakamoto took the lead early on, executing a flawless program rich in triples. Her performance not only secured first place in the team event but also marked her as a favorite in the upcoming individual women’s event. This left the United States in a challenging position, requiring strong performances from their remaining skaters to clinch the gold.
In the women’s segment, the United States turned to Amber Glenn, who managed to land her triples but struggled with the overall execution of her routine, finishing in third place. This outcome resulted in a tie between the United States and Japan, leading to a decisive showdown in the men’s segment.
With the teams tied, the spotlight shifted to Malinin, who was expected to deliver an outstanding performance. His program was ambitious, featuring multiple quad jumps, including the coveted quad axel. Despite not attempting the quad axel during the preliminary rounds, where he was bested by Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama, Malinin remained confident. He described his previous performance as “50 percent of my full potential,” emphasizing his readiness to push boundaries.
In a thrilling conclusion, Malinin’s routine shone through, even without the quad axel. He executed a series of challenging moves that outperformed Shun Sato of Japan, who skated cleanly but with less technical difficulty. Ultimately, Malinin’s performance secured the gold medal for Team USA, while Italy’s Matteo Rizzo rounded out the podium with a bronze medal.
The gold medal victory is a significant achievement for the United States, showcasing the team’s depth and the extraordinary talent of Malinin. With expectations now set even higher, fans eagerly anticipate how Malinin will approach the individual events, particularly with the quad axel still in his arsenal.
This triumph not only highlights the competitive spirit of the Olympic Games but also the individual stories that emerge, making this event a memorable chapter in the history of figure skating.
