Kim Jong Un Promotes Tourism with Spa Complex Opening
Recent images depict North Korean leader Kim Jong Un engaging with visitors at a newly opened luxury spa complex, a strategic move aimed at promoting tourism. This event took place at the Onpo Workers’ Recreation Center, which has undergone extensive renovations following Kim’s earlier dissatisfaction during a prior visit. The complex, now the largest hot springs resort in North Korea, opened its doors after a ribbon-cutting ceremony aimed at attracting more tourists, particularly from Russia.
Kim’s visit to the spa included moments captured in photographs where he tested the water while bathers relaxed in hot tubs. This publicity stunt aligns with previous efforts by the North Korean leader, who has also been seen evaluating hotel amenities and participating in leisure activities to showcase the country’s tourism potential. Notably, state media broadcast footage of Kim enjoying a barbecue with his daughter, Kim Ju Ae, at a mountain resort in Samjiyon, reinforcing the family’s involvement in promoting tourism.
The state-run news agency KCNA reported on the tour, highlighting Kim’s appreciation for the high standards of hospitality and the artistic elements within the hotel rooms. Images from the tour illustrated the pair inspecting the new hotel’s features, indicating a push to enhance North Korea’s appeal to foreign tourists.
Tourism as a Revenue Source
North Korea is focussing on tourism as a vital economic strategy amidst ongoing sanctions that impact its economy severely. According to the 2025 World Hunger Index, the nation ranks 118th out of 127 countries, underscoring its dire economic situation. The government views tourist visits as a potential influx of foreign currency, essential for economic recovery.
The new resort area is positioned as one of North Korea’s primary tourist destinations, targeting visitors from nations with friendly relations to the regime, such as China and Russia. State media emphasized the significant efforts made by Kim Jong Un to transform the Paektu area, boasting its natural beauty as an attractive feature for tourists.
Despite the challenges posed by international sanctions tied to its nuclear program, North Korea’s strategy to promote tourism represents one of the limited avenues available for generating revenue. The government hopes that by showcasing luxury facilities and family-oriented activities, it can attract visitors and stimulate economic growth.
In conclusion, Kim Jong Un’s recent activities at the Onpo Workers’ Recreation Center reflect a calculated effort to boost tourism and generate much-needed foreign currency. As the global political landscape continues to evolve, the regime’s focus on leisure and hospitality may play a crucial role in its economic strategy moving forward.
