NMIXX Embraces Evolution with Debut Album ‘Blue Valentine’
K-pop girl group NMIXX has released their highly anticipated debut full-length album, Blue Valentine, marking a significant milestone in their career. Since their debut under JYP Entertainment in 2022, NMIXX has distinguished themselves in a competitive music landscape by exploring various genres and fusing them into a sound they call MIXX Pop. The title track, a melancholic pop-rock piece, highlights the group’s vocal strength and is already gaining traction on the Korean music charts, currently positioned at No. 51 on the Melon Top 100.
The theme of love permeates the album, as the group members explain in a recent interview. “On this album, we put in a lot of love stories that maybe people are going through, have already gone through, or maybe will go through,” said Haewon, the group’s leader and main vocalist, during a late-night Zoom conversation from their headquarters in Seoul.
Exploring New Musical Horizons
“Blue Valentine is about so many different emotions that you feel when you go through love,” Haewon noted.
Each track on the album is designed to express love through diverse musical styles, showcasing the group’s commitment to artistic exploration. Fellow member Lily expressed her hopes for the album’s significance, stating, “When I look at our sunbaenims, all of their first full albums were very iconic. I really hope that our first full album can become iconic in NMIXX’s discography.”
The lead single has also drawn attention for its innovative sound. “This title song was very new for us,” Lily remarked. She described the initial shock of hearing the track and the challenges of envisioning its choreography. Despite initial reservations, the group embraced the creative process, resulting in a polished performance that they are proud of.
NMIXX thrives on their versatility, with Lily adding that their signature sound allows them to explore various genres without losing their identity. “We have the skills to back up any genre that we do,” she asserted. This adaptability is evident not only in their music but also in their dynamic performances, where intricate choreography complements their vocal prowess.
Reflections on Growth and Challenges
The group members reflected on their evolution since debuting. As they release their first full album, they acknowledge the accompanying pressures and challenges. Member Kyujin shared insights about their training regimen, stating, “Since my trainee years, we’ve trained in many different genres, choreography-wise and dance-wise.”
Lily highlighted the demanding choreography of their previous single, “High Horse,” emphasizing the hard work that went into delivering a live performance while managing complex dance moves. “I was very proud of us in that moment,” she recalled.
The music video for “Blue Valentine” features unique filming techniques and was shot in a special location, Los Angeles. Member Sullyoon noted, “There are two very special things about this music video.” Fans can look forward to behind-the-scenes footage that provides further insight into the creative process.
In a nod to their origins, the album includes reimagined versions of their debut song, “O.O.” This decision brought a sense of closure and reflection for the group. “It’s definitely a very special moment on the album,” Lily remarked. The inclusion of these tracks allows fans to witness the group’s growth and evolution since their debut.
As NMIXX approaches their fourth year as a group, they express a mix of excitement and responsibility toward their music. “NMIXX’s direction is creating this universe where diversity is respected,” Bae explained. Initially feeling pressure about their musical challenges, she now embraces the excitement that comes from their collective trust and support from their fan base, known as NSWER.
Both Haewon and Lily contributed to the album’s lyrics, a task they approached with dedication and care. Haewon shared her excitement about finally having the opportunity to write, while Lily acknowledged the challenges of ensuring the lyrics resonate with fans. This collaborative effort reflects their commitment to creating meaningful music that speaks to their audience.
With the release of Blue Valentine, NMIXX is poised to solidify their place in the K-pop landscape, embracing change and artistic growth while remaining connected to their roots. The album represents not just a collection of songs, but a testament to their journey as artists navigating the complexities of love and identity.
