Russia Launches Major Missile Attack on Ukraine, Killing Four

Russia executed an extensive overnight assault on Ukraine using hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles, resulting in at least four fatalities and numerous injuries in Kyiv. This attack marked the second deployment of the new ballistic missile known as the Oreshnik, which Russia claims can travel at speeds reaching 10 times the speed of sound. The missile is touted as being impervious to existing missile defense systems.

The barrage occurred shortly after Ukraine and its allies indicated significant advancements in discussions regarding strategies to safeguard the nation against potential further aggression from Moscow. Despite ongoing U.S.-led diplomatic efforts, fighting in the region has not subsided, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reporting progress on peace negotiations with U.S. representatives. However, Russia has not shown any flexibility regarding its demands.

This latest attack escalates tensions between Moscow and Washington, further strained after Russia condemned the U.S. seizure of an oil tanker in the North Atlantic. In addition, U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed support for stringent sanctions aimed at crippling Russia’s economy.

Ukrainian officials reported that four individuals lost their lives and at least 22 others were injured in Kyiv as apartment buildings were struck. Among the deceased was an emergency medical aid worker, according to the head of Kyiv City Military Administration, Tymur Tkachenko. Emergency responders also faced injuries while attempting to assist victims. Damage was reported at the Qatari Embassy in Kyiv, which has been instrumental in mediating prisoner exchanges.

Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed this attack was a response to a purported Ukrainian drone strike on President Vladimir Putin‘s residence last month. This assertion has been dismissed by both Ukraine and President Trump. Putin previously praised the Oreshnik missile, describing it as streaking to its target “like a meteorite” and warned that a series of these strikes could mimic the devastation of a nuclear attack.

Ukrainian intelligence has indicated that the Oreshnik missile is equipped with six warheads, each containing six submunitions. While Russia has not disclosed the specific targets of the Oreshnik, local media and military analysts suggest that it struck a large underground natural gas storage facility in western Lviv, an area critical for military aid routing from Poland.

This missile was first utilized in November 2024 against the Ukrainian city of Dnipro. Analysts suggest that its deployment introduces a new psychological warfare element, instilling fear among Ukrainians and Western nations supplying military aid.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced plans for international action in response to the missile’s use, including an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council and consultations with the Ukraine-NATO Council. He emphasized that such strikes near EU and NATO borders represent a serious threat to European security.

In Kyiv, multiple districts faced significant damage. In the Desnyanskyi district, a drone crashed onto the roof of a multi-story apartment building, while another residential structure sustained damage to its lower floors. A fire broke out in a multistory building in the Dnipro district due to drone debris. Local resident Dmytro Karpenko described the chaos: “What Russia is doing shows that they do not want peace. But people really want peace; people are suffering, people are dying.”

The attack disrupted water and electricity supplies in parts of the capital, as reported by Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko. This assault unfolded just hours after President Zelenskyy alerted the nation to Russia’s intentions for a large-scale offensive, taking advantage of the harsh winter conditions that have rendered roads extremely icy.
