San Francisco Airport Launches $180 Million Runway Renovation

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is set to commence a significant renovation project for Runway 1R/19L, with work scheduled to begin on March 30, 2026. The project, estimated to cost $180 million, aims to repave the runway, upgrade the lighting systems, and enhance the associated taxiways. Completion is anticipated by October 2, 2026.

This renovation marks the third runway refurbishment at SFO in four years. Previous projects included the renovations of Runway 1L/19R in 2023 and Runway 10R/28L in 2024. The upcoming work will take place during the busy summer travel season, which poses operational challenges as the airfield has only four runways.

While SFO officials expect a minor impact on overall flight operations, less than 10% of flights are projected to experience delays due to the closure. Runway 1R/19L is typically used for narrowbody aircraft departures in conjunction with takeoffs from Runway 1L. With this runway out of service, there will be no parallel departures from these two runways, which may particularly affect flights heading north.

Operational Adjustments During Renovation

The closure of Runway 1R/19L necessitates adjustments to the airport’s operations, requiring traffic to be redirected to the remaining three runways. This shift may lead to increased noise levels for nearby communities, as aircraft will be concentrated on fewer runways.

SFO officials have indicated that while the renovation is timed during peak travel periods, the airport’s recent experience with similar projects will help mitigate disruptions. In both 2023 and 2024, SFO successfully managed its operations with limited runway availability, providing confidence that the airport can handle the upcoming challenges.

The planned upgrades will not only enhance the safety and efficiency of Runway 1R/19L but also ensure that it meets modern aviation standards. The new surface layer will improve the runway’s durability, reducing the risk of damage from high-stress operations. Enhanced lighting will also improve visibility for pilots during takeoff and landing.

Funding and Infrastructure Improvements

Funding for the renovation project comes partly from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which is contributing approximately half of the total cost. This investment reflects a broader trend across U.S. airports, which have been focusing on upgrading their infrastructure to better serve passengers and improve operational efficiency.

Recent renovations at other airports, such as Norfolk International Airport, which repaved its primary runway in 2024, and Newark Liberty International Airport, which completed major renovations to Runway 4L/22R earlier in 2025, highlight the nationwide effort to enhance airport facilities.

Upon completion of the renovations at SFO, three out of the four runways will have undergone repaving, a significant achievement that underscores the airport’s commitment to maintaining safe and efficient air travel.
