Thousands Rally in Jerusalem Against Haredi Draft Law

Thousands of haredi (ultra-Orthodox) Jews protested in Jerusalem on March 25, 2024, against a proposed draft law aimed at conscripting more members of their community into the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The demonstration took place along Bar-Ilan Road and surrounding areas, drawing a significant police presence to ensure public safety and order.

The Jerusalem protest followed a series of demonstrations throughout Israel related to the IDF enlistment day, which aimed to recruit haredi conscripts into combat units. Clashes erupted on March 24, 2024, outside a recruitment office in Jerusalem, while another illegal protest occurred near the IDF recruitment office in Kiryat Ono, blocking access to the Tel Hashomer military base.

During the protests, a haredi demonstrator expressed deep concerns about the recruitment process. Speaking to Kan News, he stated, “Recruitment offices are like extermination ovens to us,” emphasizing the perceived threat to their religious identity. He added that many who entered these offices adhering to their faith left without their religious markers, such as the kippah and tzitzit.
