Trump, DHS Back Claims of Domestic Terrorism After ICE Killing
The killing of Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother shot by an officer from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in south Minneapolis, has ignited a fierce political debate. Following the incident on March 15, 2024, conservative figures and federal officials, including President Donald Trump, have suggested that Good was a “domestic terrorist,” despite evidence to the contrary.
Video footage from the scene shows an ICE officer attempting to open the door of Good’s vehicle as she attempted to drive away. Another ICE officer then fired three shots into the car, resulting in Good’s death and causing the vehicle to crash into a nearby telephone pole and parked vehicle. Representative Ilhan Omar has characterized Good as a “legal observer,” raising questions about the justification for the use of lethal force.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has claimed that Good was “attempting to run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them — an act of domestic terrorism.” This narrative has been echoed by other Republican figures, including Representative Nancy Mace of North Carolina, who stated that the responsibility for such violence lies with politicians who incite hatred against law enforcement.
Statements from President Trump have further fueled the controversy. He asserted that Good’s actions amounted to an attack on the officers, labeling her a “professional agitator.” In a post on Truth Social, he claimed that the officer who shot Good acted in self-defense and suggested that she had violently attempted to run over the officer.
Despite the claims made by DHS and Trump, there has been no independent confirmation of injuries sustained by ICE officers during the incident. A widely circulated video appears to show an officer walking away from the scene while instructing others to call for emergency assistance.
DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin characterized the observers present at the scene as “violent rioters,” insisting that the officer’s actions were defensive. She maintained that the officers involved were in recovery and expected to make full recoveries, although this has not been independently verified.
During a press conference, Kirsti Noem, the Secretary of Homeland Security, announced intentions to request the Justice Department to prosecute the incident as domestic terrorism. She claimed there is a systematic effort to train individuals to use vehicles as weapons against law enforcement.
Reports indicate that Good’s death may mark at least the fifth fatal incident involving ICE since Trump’s second term began, including past cases of individuals killed during ICE operations. To date, no officers have faced charges related to these deaths, including the shooting of Good.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz have voiced strong opposition to the narrative being promoted by federal officials. Frey labeled the claims of self-defense as “bulls**t,” reiterating that the immediate assertions from ICE were misleading. Walz echoed this sentiment, expressing concern over what he described as a “propaganda machine” at work.
Supporters of Good have gathered at the site of the shooting to hold vigils and pay tribute to her memory. Friends and family described her as a devoted Christian and a caring individual. Her ex-husband revealed that she had just dropped off their six-year-old son at school prior to the incident. Good’s mother spoke to local media, emphasizing her daughter’s kindness and compassion.
The controversy surrounding Good’s shooting highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding immigration enforcement and the use of force by authorities. The state has pledged to ensure a thorough investigation into the incident, aiming for accountability and justice in the wake of a tragic loss of life.
