U.S. Defends Military Actions in Venezuela at UN Meeting
The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, defended American military actions in Venezuela during an emergency meeting on March 25, 2024. Waltz asserted that the operations do not constitute a regime change or occupation of the country. He reiterated the stance taken by the previous administration, stating that the military force deployed was a necessary component of a law enforcement operation rather than an act of aggression.
Waltz emphasized that the objective of the U.S. actions was to assist in the legal pursuit of a narcotrafficker who has long been indicted for crimes against the American public. “As Secretary Rubio has stated, there is no war against Venezuela or its people. We are not occupying a country,” he said. He characterized the military engagement as a lawful enforcement operation aimed at justice rather than regime change, reinforcing his point through social media prior to the meeting.
International Response and Concerns
The reaction from international leaders has been mixed. Following the U.S. operations, a spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep concern over the escalation in Venezuela, warning of potential implications for regional stability. The statement called for all parties involved in Venezuela to engage in dialogue while respecting human rights and the rule of law.
In Europe, France’s foreign minister condemned the U.S. actions as a violation of international law. President Emmanuel Macron further distanced his administration from the operation, stating that he neither supported nor approved of the military intervention.
During an interview on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that the U.S. government retains the option for military action if deemed necessary. He emphasized that President Trump would not rule out any potential military engagement, particularly in response to imminent threats. Rubio stated that economic pressure remains the primary strategy against remaining members of the Venezuelan regime.
Implications of U.S. Military Actions
Rubio highlighted the complexities involved in capturing Venezuelan officials, noting the challenges of arresting multiple individuals simultaneously. He pointed out that the U.S. had prioritized the apprehension of the main target, which he believes is more effective than attempting a larger operation that could lead to significant backlash.
He stated, “Imagine the howls we would have from everybody else if we actually had to go and stay there four days to capture four other people. We got the top priority.” This comment underscores the controversial nature of U.S. military strategy in the region, where officials such as Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello and Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino remain at large despite having been indicted in the Southern District of New York and facing substantial U.S. government bounties.
In light of these developments, Rubio reiterated that the U.S. is focused on cutting off the financial resources of the current Venezuelan regime. He claimed that the ongoing measures, including an oil quarantine, aim to exert considerable leverage over the future political landscape in Venezuela.
As the situation unfolds, the international community continues to monitor the implications of U.S. military actions on regional stability and the ongoing crisis in Venezuela.
