The death toll from a devastating fire in Hong Kong’s Wang Fuk Court apartment complex has risen to 146 as recovery efforts continue. Investigators found additional bodies in the charred remains of the eight-building structure, which became engulfed in flames on Wednesday, March 15, 2024. The tragedy has prompted an outpouring of grief, with many residents and well-wishers laying flowers at a makeshift memorial at the site.

According to Cheng Ka-chun, the officer in charge of the Hong Kong police Disaster Victim Identification Unit, the search for victims is painstaking. Investigators have discovered bodies both within the apartment units and on the roofs of the buildings. Cheng noted the difficulty of the search due to the dark conditions inside, stating, “It is so dark inside, and because of the low light, it is very difficult to do the work, especially in places away from the windows.” As of now, four of the seven blocks have been thoroughly examined.

The situation remains dire, with an estimated 100 individuals still unaccounted for and 79 injured. Tsang Shuk-yin, head of the casualty unit, confirmed these figures while adding that many families are still awaiting news of their loved ones.

In the aftermath of the fire, which took nearly two days to extinguish fully, local residents have come together to support those who lost everything. Donations of supplies and assistance have poured in, and hundreds have visited the memorial to pay their respects. One mourner, Lian Shuzheng, emphasized the tragedy as a wake-up call regarding safety in high-rise buildings.

Investigations and Safety Concerns

The fire at Wang Fuk Court raised immediate concerns about safety procedures. The complex, built in the 1980s, was undergoing renovations at the time of the fire, with scaffolding and foam panels reportedly covering windows. The Hong Kong government has suspended work on 28 construction projects managed by the same contractor, Prestige Construction & Engineering Company, pending safety audits. In an official statement, authorities noted “serious deficiencies” in site safety management.

Three individuals associated with the construction firm, including directors and an engineering consultant, were arrested on suspicion of manslaughter, with allegations of gross negligence. Although they were initially released on bail, they were rearrested by anti-corruption authorities, along with eight other suspects linked to the project.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire originated on lower-level scaffolding and spread rapidly due to the flammable materials used in the renovation. Chris Tang, Hong Kong’s secretary for security, indicated that winds exacerbated the situation, allowing flames to leap from building to building. First responders discovered that several fire alarms in the complex failed to activate during the emergency.

Community Response and Broader Implications

The tragedy has deeply affected the local community, particularly as many of the victims were vulnerable residents, including migrant workers. The Indonesian Foreign Ministry reported that seven Indonesian nationals were among the deceased, while the Philippines Consulate General confirmed one Filipina domestic helper was killed, with twelve others still missing.

On Sunday, a significant gathering took place in central Hong Kong as hundreds of Filipinos participated in a candlelight vigil, singing hymns and offering prayers for the victims. The emotional response highlights the widespread impact of the tragedy across different communities.

In response to the fire, the Ministry of Emergency Management in Beijing announced a nationwide inspection of high-rise buildings to identify fire hazards. The ministry stated that they would focus on examining bamboo scaffolding, non-flame-retardant safety nets, and essential fire safety equipment.

As investigations continue, the community remains united in mourning while advocating for improved safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future. The ongoing recovery efforts and the emotional toll of the incident underscore the urgent need for accountability and reform in building safety practices.
