President Donald Trump is experiencing a notable decline in approval ratings among his core supporters, according to a new poll released by NBC News. The survey, which was conducted by SurveyMonkey, indicates a growing dissatisfaction among Republicans and those who identify with the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement regarding Trump’s performance as president.

The poll results, published on December 10, 2023, reveal that only 35% of Republicans who align more closely with the GOP than the MAGA movement expressed strong approval for Trump. This figure represents a slight decrease from 38% in April. In contrast, the approval among MAGA Republicans stands at 70%, although this reflects an 8-point drop from 78% noted earlier in the year.

Fractured Support Among Republicans

The latest findings also highlight a shift in identity among Republican voters. Previously, a majority identified with the MAGA movement, but the current data shows that the party is now evenly divided between traditional GOP affiliation and MAGA identification. This change suggests that a segment of Trump’s base is reassessing their loyalty amid concerns about his leadership.

Trump’s overall approval rating remains low, with only 42% of Americans approving of his job performance, a decrease of 3 percentage points since the poll’s initial findings in April. Conversely, 58% of respondents expressed disapproval. These figures may reflect broader economic concerns, as 41% of Americans reported that their financial situation has remained unchanged over the past year, while 35% indicated it has worsened, and 24% stated it has improved.

The poll also revealed that 64% of Americans believe the country is on the wrong track, compared to just 36% who feel it is on the right path. Conducted online among 20,252 adults from November 20 to December 8, 2023, the poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.9 percentage points.

Insights from Polling Experts

The poll’s findings align with recent commentary from CNN polling expert Harry Enten. He noted that Trump’s support among MAGA voters has waned significantly. In March, 66% of Trump supporters planning to vote in the 2024 presidential election strongly approved of his performance. That number has now dropped to just 50%.

Enten pointed out that while Trump’s supporters continue to like him, their enthusiasm has lessened, which opens the door for dissent within the ranks. He referenced recent developments in Indiana, where local Republicans rejected Trump’s push for redistricting, indicating a growing willingness to oppose the former president. “You can go against him, as exactly they did in Indiana,” Enten stated, emphasizing the shift in dynamics among Trump’s loyalists.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, the implications of these polling results may have significant consequences for Trump as he seeks re-election in 2024. The changing sentiments among his supporters could impact campaign strategies and voter turnout as the election approaches.
