Tributes Pour In for Jack Brown, 92, Beloved San Pedro Resident

John (Jack) Paul Brown, a cherished member of the San Pedro community, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2025, at the age of 92. Surrounded by family, Jack’s life was marked by love, dedication, and an enduring spirit that touched many.

Jack was born on March 10, 1933, to Robert and Agnes Brown in Long Beach, California. His early years in San Pedro were filled with fond memories of catching tadpoles at Averill Park and selling newspapers to sailors arriving at the local port. His first job was with Helen Grace Chocolates, where he began forming lifelong friendships. During World War II, Jack joined his father in his duties as a Civilian Air Warden, contributing to the community’s efforts during a challenging time.

His education began at Mary Star of the Sea Elementary School and continued at St. Anthony’s High School in Long Beach. Before the construction of the Vincent Thomas Bridge, Jack regularly took a ferry across the harbor to reach school. An accomplished distance runner, he excelled in Track and Field, earning numerous accolades throughout his high school career. Jack pursued a degree in Drafting and maintained his passion for athletics by continuing to run Track in college.

Jack began his professional journey at Northrop Grumman, where he made significant contributions to the aerospace industry. Later, he ventured into entrepreneurship, establishing his own business that provided employment for friends and colleagues he had met throughout his career.

In 1969, Jack met Rita Cebula, the love of his life. They married on April 17, 1971, and together they raised two children, Dennis and Julie. Jack and Rita were deeply involved in their community, particularly through their church, where Rita dedicated 25 years to teaching at Holy Trinity.

Jack’s interests extended beyond family and work. He enjoyed family vacations, gardening, and DIY projects. In his leisure time, he collected coins, delighted those around him with his unique sense of humor, and began each day with coffee and a crossword puzzle, keeping a close eye on the stock market.

Jack is survived by his children, Dennis and Julie, and his grandchildren, Natalie and Vincent. He also leaves behind his sister, Agnes Welsh, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rita, as well as his parents, Robert and Agnes, brother Robert, sister Phyllis Smith, and nephews Bob and Tom Smith.
