Community Mourns the Passing of Jack Brown at 92 Years Old

John (Jack) Paul Brown, a beloved member of the San Pedro community, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2025, at the age of 92. Surrounded by family, Jack’s departure marks the end of a remarkable life filled with cherished memories and contributions to his community.

Born on March 10, 1933, in Long Beach, California, Jack was the son of Robert and Agnes Brown. His early years were spent in San Pedro, where he fondly recalled catching tadpoles at Averill Park and selling newspapers to sailors arriving in port. Jack began his career at a young age as one of the first employees at Helen Grace Chocolates and participated in his father’s duties as a Civilian Air Warden during World War II.

Jack’s education began at Mary Star of the Sea Elementary School and continued at St. Anthony’s High School in Long Beach. Before the construction of the Vincent Thomas Bridge, he would take a ferry across the harbor to attend school. His passion for sports was evident during his high school years, particularly as a distance runner on the Track and Field team, where he earned numerous accolades. He further pursued this interest while obtaining a degree in Drafting at college.

Following his education, Jack worked at Northrop Grumman before venturing into entrepreneurship. He established his own business, employing friends and colleagues he had met throughout his career.

In 1969, Jack met his future wife, Rita Cebula. The couple married on April 17, 1971, and welcomed their children, Dennis in 1972 and Julie in 1975. Their family was actively involved in the community, particularly at Holy Trinity Church, where Rita taught for 25 years.

Jack was known for his love of family vacations, gardening, and various hobbies, including sports, DIY projects, and coin collecting. He had a unique sense of humor that brought laughter to those around him. Each day, he began with a cup of coffee, a crossword puzzle, and a keen interest in the stock market.

Jack is survived by his children, Dennis and Julie, along with grandchildren Natalie and Vincent, his sister Agnes Welsh, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rita, his parents Robert and Agnes, brother Robert, sister Phyllis Smith, and nephews Bob and Tom Smith.

A funeral mass will be held in Jack’s honor on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Holy Trinity Church, with burial to follow at Green Hills Memorial Park.
